So last night a friend sent me an article about a Paleo only restaurant. I’m a lawyer, I can’t help but put in my two cents about it. I get the whole avoiding modern crops – we weren’t meant to live on processed corn, but the idea that people focus on what cavemen did baffles me, especially when you look at what these people tout the caveman did. I’d really like to meet the caveman who was baking gluten-free spicy pumpkin pie. One of the CrossFit boxes I used to workout at did a Paleo Night Out at a local restaurant. It was always a blast. We’d have great food and a good time socializing with the people we were used to pouring sweat with. But avocado “ice cream” because cavemen who were in a climate cold enough to freeze ice cream had avocados. Yes I get that the Paleo diet isn’t anti-modern technology. It’s simply humorous to me.
Like I said, I tried the Paleo thing when we did Paleo challenges. And it’s a great way to get your numbers down, such as BP and weight and BF %. But it always left me without nearly the energy I needed. Yes, back then I was running 30-40 miles per week and I needed the carbs that were just hard to get enough of them on veggies. I’m not running near that amount now so my carb intake has drastically gone down, but I’m glad “clean eating” will allow me to get a better carb intake via whole grains.
Here’s the article for those of you that are curious.
Today’s Training:
Morning WOD:
5 Rounds
10 Front Squats (135/95)
15 KB SDHP (70/53)
20 Box Jumps (24”/20”)
200 m run
Score: 25:35 Rx’d. AWFUL. I messed up my form on squat 5 in round 2 and it just killed me the rest of the wod. I finished the first round in 3:01…wth! Going to feel that back later today.
Also, alarms a wonderful thing. I was going to bed when my phone alarm went off reminding me to ice my shoulder….will have to set it again for tonight to ice the back.
Afternoon:
Clean & Jerk 6 x 2 (85), 3 min rest between sets
Wall Balls 6 x 10 (unbroken), 2 min rest
Afternoon training designed by Justin Key @ CrossFit Coweta. Key’s our Southeast “spider monkey” and helped me out significantly at the South Georgia Throwdown. I heard him yell at me “checklist” so many times regarding my form that I hear his voice whenever I read his facebook posts – and there are a million of them b/c he’s a bit of a fb whore. So now he’s passed on the Russian Squat program he’s been doing for me to test on Clean & Jerks. The wall balls are the fact that I have a mile long list of things I stink at (re: FB post from SGTD – “I suck at wall balls like a HS prom queen”). Before I would try to do “skill work” everyday, doing a different one each day. Well looking at Key’s programming of his lifting, I decided to pick one element and focus on it 3x/wk for 3 wks to see how the improvement goes. Hopefully it’ll provide me focus and consistency to actually improve.
Eating:
Pre-WOD (5:00 am): 1 scoop Advocare Spark energy
Post-WOD (6:30 am): 1 scoop Body Fortress whey protein
Breakfast (7:20 am): turkey & parmesan omelet, 1 c. blackberries
Lunch (11:45 am): Great lunch w/Luan from Iron Tribe Fitness @ Urban Cookhouse. Shrimp kebabs, salad, rice
Snack (5:20 pm - see planning is awesome and prevents cranky face): apple, 1 oz almonds
Dinner (8:00 pm): spaghetti squash, shrimp, marinara, spinach....Spaghetti squash is easily one of my best food friends.
Treat - yes it was treat time. I had promised my friend, Dayna, that I'd watch Paranormal Activity 3 with her tonight and I go to the movies about once every 3 months. And what do the movies mean? For me - KIDS' COMBO! - kid's popcorn, pack of candy (Reese's Pieces is the only candy I find worth it) and a child's soda which I would normally pass on unless they have root beer. And lo and behold...Barq's root beer.
Have to latch on to the little things like movie dates with reese's pieces (which i mix in with the popcorn) and root beer.
Downside - scary movie means probably no sleep. :-/
